Dachshund Puppy Health Tips – Treating Diarrhea in Dachshund Puppies

Diarrhea in your dachshund pup can be very dangerous due to dehydration, so here are some tips on how to treat it. The first thing you should do is cut the amount of fat and foods that can cause further upset in your weiner dog. You can use the BRAT diet on your dachshund puppy for a day or two, which stands for bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast. If you keep your pup on this diet for more than 48 hours, you may want to add some boiled chicken to provide the needed protein. You should know that for the first day or two, your dachshund puppies stomach is likely to be upset; therefore he may not have much of an appetite. You should never force feed your dachshund pup, and if you have more than one dog, it is smart to feed your sick dachshund puppy in another room so he won’t eat just to prevent the other dog from eating his food. The most important thing is that your weiner dog is drinking water. As long as he’s doing that, you shouldn’t have anything to worry about. As his stomach heals itself and the body rids itself of toxins, your dachshund pup will begin eating again in a few days.  However, if your weiner dog stops drinking water or develops signs of dehydration, it is time to call your vet. Your vet may recommend prescription medications or may have you give your pup over-the-counter human remedies to stop the diarrhea. Never give your dachshund pup over-the-counter medicines without your vet’s approval first.

Dachsund Puppy Health Tips – Preventing Dog Parvo in Dachshund Puppies

puppies dachshunds wirehairedParvo is a very dangerous disease for dachshund puppies and can be life threatening to your dog, so preventive measures should be taken. The number one and most important thing you can do to prevent parvo in weiner dogs is to get your dog vaccinated. Vaccinations are vital in maintaining your pups health.  It is important to know that puppies are the most common victims of dog parvo symptoms, due to the antibodies the dachshund puppies receive from their mother’s milk interfering with the vaccines commonly given to puppies. Unfortunately, vets do not know exactly when the passive immunity from the mother dog stops, allowing the vaccine to begin creating active immunity.  Because of this uncertainty, dachshund puppies should be vaccinated between 6 – 8 weeks and then again every three or four weeks until the pup reaches about 4 months. These repetitive vaccinations allow at least one of the vaccines to reach the pup at a time when the passive immunity has worn off. This will prevent your dachshund pup from getting this deadly disease. Your dog should then receive a booster shot yearly to maintain the immunity. Vaccination is the key to prevention, so be sure to get your dachshund puppy vaccinated and keep him up to date on his shots.
